Sherifa Riahi
Sherifa Riahi is a woman human rights defender who works for Terre d’Asile Tunisie, the Tunisian branch of French NGO France Terre d’Asile, which provides assistance to refugees and migrants. She was held for 20 months in pretrial detention since her arrest on 10 May 2024 during a crackdown on NGOs supporting refugees and migrants, fuelled by racist and xenophobic rhetoric. On 15 December 2025, Sherifa Riahi, and two other human rights defenders Ayadh Bousselmi and Mohamed Joo, had a hearing in a criminal trial before the Tunis Court of First Instance on bogus charges related to their work for Terre d’Asile. On 05 January 2026, following a court hearing that suspended the full execution of their two-year prison sentence, the authorities released Sherifa Riahi, along with Ayadh Bousselmi, Mohamed Joo, Imen Ouardani and Mohamed Iqbal Khaled.
