Shervin Hajipour
Shervin Hajipour is an Iranian singer-songwriter and the artist behind “Baraye,” a song released amid the protests surrounding the death of woman human rights defender Mahsa Amini. The song became known as the “anthem” of the protests and was recognised worldwide, earning the Special Merit Award for Best Song for Social Change at the 2023 Grammys. On 1 March 2024, Hajipour was sentenced to over three years in prison for the song, which authorities alleged “incit[ed] people to riot”. Hajipour has contested this charge as unjust. Hajipour has also been placed under a two-year travel ban and ordered to compose a song addressing “US crimes,” according to a report by the Human Rights Activists News Agency.
