Suad Al-Munayes
Suad Al-Munayes is a Kuwaiti human rights defender and activist who has dedicated much of her life to promoting human rights and supporting women’s participation in public life. Al-Munayes is a member of the “Kuwaitis for Jerusalem Committee” and an active member of the Women’s Cultural and Social Society, an organisation focused on women’s empowerment. She has consistently used her X account to express her personal opinions on public affairs concerning citizens in Kuwait and across the Arab region, engaging in peaceful and constitutionally protected expression. On the morning of 03 March 2026, Suad Al-Munayes, aged 73, was arbitrarily arrested by the State Security Apparatus alongside fellow activist Fareah Al-Saqqaf for peacefully expressing their views online. Following her arrest, Suad Al-Munayes was held in arbitrary detention for ten days by the State Security Apparatus before being transferred to the Central Prison, where authorities ordered her to remain in pretrial detention for 21 days pending further investigation. Her detention raises serious concerns given her age and longstanding commitment to peaceful activism, and illustrates the increasing targeting of even elderly human rights defenders in Kuwait. At the same time, the authorities also targeted individuals in her immediate activist circle, including Fareah Al-Saqqaf, whose whereabouts have not been officially confirmed following her arrest, raising concerns about enforced disappearance and lack of due process guarantees. As of the most recent updates in March 2026, there is no confirmed information indicating that Suad Al-Munayes has been released, and she remains at risk of continued arbitrary detention and prosecution in connection with her peaceful expression.
