Zeinab Faraj
Zeinab Faraj is a Lebanese freelance photographer and field journalist who has been covering the armed conflict in southern Lebanon and was seriously injured in an Israeli airstrike on 22 April 2026 while reporting alongside journalist Amal Khalil in a context of escalating violence and increasing risks faced by media workers in the region. Zeinab Faraj had been documenting the aftermath of Israeli strikes and the humanitarian impact of the conflict near the border area of al-Tiri when an Israeli drone strike hit a civilian vehicle ahead of the journalists, killing its occupants and forcing Zeinab Faraj and Amal Khalil to seek shelter. Shortly afterwards, their own vehicle was struck, and they took refuge in a nearby residential building which was subsequently targeted in further airstrikes, in what multiple sources describe as a repeated or “double-tap” attack. During these strikes, Zeinab Faraj sustained serious injuries, including head wounds, and remained trapped for a period as rescue operations were delayed by continued bombardment and reported obstruction by Israeli forces, including fire directed at ambulances and rescue teams attempting to reach the site. Zeinab Faraj was eventually evacuated by emergency responders and transferred to hospital for treatment, while Amal Khalil remained trapped under the rubble and later died from her injuries. In testimonies following the attack, Zeinab Faraj stated her belief that the journalists had been deliberately targeted, noting that they were clearly identifiable as press and that Amal Khalil had previously received threats linked to her reporting. The incident prompted strong condemnation from Lebanese authorities and international organisations, with officials accusing Israel of committing a “war crime” and calling for an independent investigation into what appears to be a serious violation of international humanitarian law protecting journalists in conflict zones.
