Mohammed Jawad Hameed

Mohammed Jawad Hameed is a Bahraini musician, singer and human-rights and environmental activist. As a resident of Ma’ameer, a village in the Kingdom of Bahrain that is surrounded by over 130 polluting factories, industrial workshops, petroleum and petrochemical plants, Jawad became aware of environmental damage at an early age. Throughout his career, he has been engaged in drawing attention to environmental and human rights abuses in his country and region. He has been persecuted for his activism, but this has not deterred Jawad who is resolute in his demands for clean air and a healthy environment, and an end to discrimination in Bahrain.

On 07 April 2026, the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science summoned prominent environmental activist and artist Mohammed Jawad Hameed, and then took him into detention. On 15 April 2026, Jawad was brought before the Public Prosecution, where the prosecutor decided to extend his detention for an additional two weeks on charges of “hatred of the regime.” On 16 June 2026, the general prosecution renewed the detention of Jawad, although he already spent more than two months in prison, for criticising the killing of Mohammed Al-Mousawi under torture.
