Hiba Abu Taha
Hiba Abu Taha is a Palestinian-Jordanian journalist. She was arbitrarily arrested on 13 May 2024 due to a complaint filed against her by the Amman Public Prosecutor in the name of “public law” and detained for a week pending investigation. The Public Prosecutor rejected her lawyer’s request to release her on bail. She was arrested in connection with her April 2024 article on the Lebanese Annasher website titled “Partners in Genocide… Jordanian Capital Involved in Genocide in the Gaza Strip.” On 11 June 2024, a court in Amman sentenced Abu Taha to one year in prison, convicting her of violating the Cybercrimes Law. She was freed on 13 February 2025 upon completing her prison sentence.
On 03 March 2026, the authorities arrested Abu Taha due to a Facebook post. On 19 March 2026, the Amman Criminal Court sentenced her to two years in prison after convicting her of publishing material that could incite sedition, discord, or threaten social peace, according to Article 17 of the Cybercrime Law. Her trial lacked the minimum international standards for a fair trial and due process, as she was denied the right to a defence after her lawyer was prevented from presenting his arguments.
